About

About us
At Fumoto, we create unique, hand-dyed t-shirts inspired by Japanese culture, wabi-sabi aesthetics, meditation, and psychedelic colour experiences. Each piece is carefully dyed in Byron Bay, Australia, using high-quality materials sourced from Koshoku no Bi, a family-owned company in Japan specialising in traditional dyes.

We believe in the beauty of imperfection and natural processes. While we prioritise natural dyeing methods, we use select fixatives to ensure colour longevity and fabric compatibility. Every material is carefully chosen to align with our commitment to sustainability. Our t-shirts are made from organic cotton by Stanley/Stella, ensuring comfort, durability, and an eco-conscious approach.

Whether you're drawn to the earthy tones of Bengala, the deep blacks of Soot (Susuzome), or the vibrant blues of Indigo (Aijozome), each Fumoto tee carries a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.

Each of our colours is carefully crafted using traditional Japanese dyes, creating a unique depth and character.

About Our Dyeing
We use high-quality Japanese dyes sourced from Koshoku no Bi, a family-owned company that blends traditional wisdom with modern techniques to create fabric-friendly dyes. These dyes offer soft, earthy tones that evolve beautifully over time.

Unlike synthetic dyes, our colours are intentionally muted and fade gracefully, reflecting the beauty of natural change over time.

Bengala Dye
• Soft, organic tones – Muted reds, browns, and ochres.
• Inspired by natural minerals – Derived from iron oxide.
• Naturally UV-resistant – Colours stay rich even under the sun.

Bengala is a mineral-based pigment made from iron oxide, traditionally used in Japanese pottery, textiles, and architecture. Unlike plant or chemical dyes, Bengala binds mineral pigments to fabric, creating unique, earthy hues.

Susuzome (Soot Dye)
• Soft, smoky black – Not jet black, but a deep, muted tone.
• Derived from pinewood soot – A fabric-friendly adaptation of SUMI ink.

Susuzome is a Japanese black dye made from pine soot, the same material used in SUMI ink for calligraphy and painting. This ancient technique has been adapted for fabric, creating a deep, charcoal-like black with a matte finish.

Aijozome (Indigo Dye)
• Soft, faded blues – No toxic agents used in the dye process.
• Naturally derived – Made from South Indian indigo plant.

Aijozome is a modern, eco-conscious version of traditional indigo dyeing. Unlike standard indigo processes, it dissolves in water without harsh chemical agents, making it a gentler alternative.
